ASC 2003, Warwick

Competition for the Best Presented Poster

Background

After successful poster competitions at Compstat in Utrecht and Berlin, the ASC committee decided that a repeat would be appropriate for its own International Conference. The prize is designed to encourage participants presenting material through posters to give more attention to the design and presentation aspects of their work. The motivation and criteria behind this proposal are discussed on the main Poster Prize page.

Criteria

The posters were judged on the quality of their design and their effectiveness at communicating their message. The nature or quality of the substantive content of the poster was not considered as a factor.

The prize for this competition was £100.

The Poster Competition

There were 7 posters presented at Warwick, with displays set up in the same area as refreshments and the Exhibition. The judges were:

Randy Banks, Andrew Westlake and Garj Basi, all from the ASC committee.

The judges viewed the posters independently, and then came together to reach a decision about the prize. They were all pleasantly surprised by the effort that had clearly been invested into the design and implementation of the posters.

The Winner

The judges were unanimous in agreeing to award to prize to:

Zoë Dowling, Department of Sociology, University of Surrey, UK

The Opportunities and Challenges Presented by Web Survey Design

This poster has good overall design and level of detail, though it is a little weak on immediate impact.

Highly Commended

The following poster was highly commended by the judges.

The Use of On-line Surveys to Explore the Impact of Wellcome Trust Funding

Priya Lukka and Damian de Aspey, The Wellcome Trust, UK

The immediate impact is good, but the design and detail could be stronger.
